Crypto Scams Surge to Record $9.3 Billion in U.S. During 2024, FBI Reports
Cryptocurrency-related fraud reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with Americans losing $9.32 billion to digital asset scams—a 66% annual increase that now represents over half of all cybercrime losses nationwide. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center documented nearly 150,000 crypto-specific complaints in its annual cybercrime assessment.
Senior citizens emerged as particularly vulnerable targets, filing 33,36 complaints—a 96% spike from 2023—while suffering $2.84 billion in losses. The 71% year-over-year increase in elderly victimization underscores scammers’ growing sophistication in exploiting this demographic.
